Araw ng Kagitingan (English:"Day of Valour") is a national holiday in the Philippines which commemorates the fall of Bataan during World War II. Every April 9, the Philippines commemorates the Araw ng Kagitingan, also known as the Bataan and Corregidor Day.

After Pearl Harbor, the Japanese air attack crippled the US air force and navy stationed in the Philippines. By January 1941, the Japanese had occupied Manila and in March, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the commanding General of the USAFFE, left for Australia. The remaining forces in Bataan surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. If you’ve noticed, that’s the date of the Araw ng Kagitingan.

But Corregidor kept on fighting for one more month. Corregidor is the second most bombed island during World War II, next to Malta. On May 6, 1942, Corregidor surrendered.

The Pacific War Memorial stands at the Topside of Corregidor Island. It’s a reminder of the bravery and heroism of the combined US and Philippine forces against Japanese aggression. It’s also a reminder of the suffering and horrors that war brings, something which the world still sees up to this day.

Relay For Life, sponsored by College Students Against Cancer at UC Davis and in conjunction with The American Cancer Society, is a 24-hour event designed to raise money for cancer research and awareness efforts. UC Davis has hosted this miraculous event since 2004 and since then, Relay For Life has had an average of 88 teams and over 1,000 participants each year. Community members of all ages, student organizations, athletic teams, fraternities and sororities partake in this event.

This will be the first time the Brothers of Chi Rho Omicron (XPO) will partake in this exhilarating and meaningful opportunity. Together with other fellow students, friends, families, cancer patients, and cancer survivors we will come together on April 10, 2010 on the UC Davis campus and share our strong sense of care, hope, and awareness to our community.

Mark Jaramilla is from Beta Chapter and is an avid cyclist. He, along with other brothers, is at the forefront of organizing bike-riding events entitled ~~Tour de XPO~~ Tour ng XPO to promote "non-competitive and socially engaging" activities. Currently held within the San Francisco Bay Area, they hope to expand these events to other chapters across California.

Tour De XPO - A Brief History:

In June, #121 Elmer Dispo, #136 Noel Cayago, #148 Hervey Herrera, #274 Kevin Bernadino, and I trekked out on bicycles to Golden Gate Park to enjoy a sunny day in San Francisco. We tossed around some ideas about making this an annual event and eventually came to the conclusion that an event like this should not be limited to just XPOs. So after some deliberation, we recently held the inaugural Tour De XPO on July 13th, 2009. #178 Larry Guinto, along with a friend, and my sister Gen, joined us to a trip to the Golden Gate Bridge. Invites went out via Facebook and Twitter, but for some reason I failed to get the word out on the XPO mass email. My apologies and I meant no offense. Tomorrow [August 23, 2009], we'll be hosting Tour De XPO again and out destination will be City Hall.

Why Tour De XPO

With the recent interest in cycling and cycling events, a title was needed to coin a simple, yet appealing, name for the event. Tour of California and Tour De France are both popular events that everyone is familiar with. With the title "Tour De XPO", I felt that this event could be held and applied to any active chapter. Imagine a Tour De XPO: San Diego or Tour De XPO: Sacramento! The idea was not to keep this event securely for Beta but to share the format with all chapters. So if you wish to "borrow" the idea, by all means do so. Since it's XPO, it's technically yours!

There has also been some concerns about health and lack of activities within our brotherhood. It was our hope to engage this issue head on with a non-competitive and socially engaging program: Cycling has proven to be a healthy form of recreation and creates a form of comradery, while allowing an individual to accomplish personal goals. By no means is this a race. Nobody gets left behind, just like our brotherhood. All we ask from participants is that you don't give up and we ride out on time!

How is Cycling related to XPO?

Ever heard of Tour of Luzon?? How about the Marlboro Tour?? Its most current title is Padyak Pinoy (aka Tour of the Philippines or Tour ng Pilipinas), which is a competitive race held annually in the Philippines. Pilipinos has had interest in cycling since the 1950's and even today remain competitive in the cycling world, i.e. Nino Surban - 1st Place Winner of the ASEAN Mountain Bike Championship 2009, Padyak Pinoy 2009 champion Joel Calderon, Liquigaz-LPGMA Tour of Luzon winner Mark Guevarra, and Lloyd Lucien Reynante, the overall individual runner-up in the Padyak Pinoy and Tour Luzon. These riders are representing the Philippines at this very moment! XPO has the opportunity to be at the forefront and foster a bicycle community within our already existing FilAm community! The real question is, why not??

Who can join Tour De XPO

Anybody can join Tour de XPO! Though it would be possible to arrange XPO-Only rides, I believe this is our chance to show everyone our support for a greener, healthier society. To limit ourselves from exposure to an already established cycling community would only deter our learning and network capacity. So brothers, potential brothers, friends, and family are all welcome! *Currently pending is the Tour De XPO Event Waiver Form.

Gawad Kalinga

As a fraternity we are proud and thankful to have a house and a home but we realize there are so many people out there who are not as fortunate as us. So it is a goal for the Brothers of CHI RHO OMICRON to build a house in the Philippines for the underprivileged by raising money and donating it to Gawad Kalinga.

What is Gawad Kalinga?

Gawad Kalinga (GK) translated in English means to "to give care", and it is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but in the world. GK's vision for the Philippines is a slum-free nation through a simple strategy of providing land for the landless, homes for the homeless, food for the hungry and as a result providing dignity and peace for those in need.

Gawad Kalinga is more than about building houses for the poorest of the poor. Providing a decent home is just the beginning of the transformation of the people and the community.

Our goal is to raise $1800 to build a house for the less fortunate in the Metro Manila area in the Philippines and turn that money over to Gawad Kalinga. Using their contractors, materials and connections this small $1800 donation can build a home for a family of four! In December 2008, it was estimated that 8.1 million Filipinos lived in Slums or "squatter homes" (self constructed shelters made from scrap metal and other available resources). Please help XPO and do your part to give someone a place to live and a home to call their own.

We are writing to request your support for the Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act which includes provisions to restore veterans status to Filipino WWII veterans. Time is running out for this bill, and we strongly urge your leadership on this important issue.

On April 24, the Senate voted to pass this bill (S. 1315) by the overwhelming bipartisan vote of 96-1 and it is time for the House to follow suit. This bill is of UTMOST IMPORTANCE to our community and we call on you to support this bill in its current form and to vote for it when it comes to a floor vote. We strongly urge you to oppose any efforts to weaken the provisions of the bill.

Out of the original 250,000 Filipino soldiers originally called to serve, there are only 18,000 veterans left, and the time is now to rectify the 62-year injustice done to these few brave soldiers. We call on you to restore full equity to our veterans so that they can live out their remaining years with the full measure of honor befitting their service to this country.

*"US SENATE PASSES VETERANS BENEFITS FOR FILIPINO VETERANS 96-1"*

*San Francisco** CA*- The US Senate began deliberation on S.1315 on April
22, 2008 and today, with a vote of 96-1, the bill was finally passed. This
bill is generally an omnibus bill enhancing benefits to most US veterans.
The provision of S.57 was partly incorporated in S. 1315 which will afford
the Filipino veterans in the US to receive the same benefits as those of
their US veteran counterpart. Those who are residing in the Philippines
shall receive a monthly special pension of $300/month if the bill is finally
signed into law.

"We would like to thank the leadership of the Senators Inouye and Senator
Akaka for making it a possibility for this bill to pass. This is our long
awaited desire to be recognized for all our sacrifices during World War II,"
said veteran Baldonado, SF Commissioner and VEC board member.

Senator Inouye reminded legislators, in his very emotional speech today
,about the bravery of Filipino soldiers during the Bataan Death March.
According to Inouye, "for their courage and contributions during World War
II the Filipino veterans deserve to live in dignity and that passing the
bill shall restore their honor."

Calling the Filipino veterans benefit as a costly provision, Senator Richard
Burr from North Carolina strongly opposed the provision giving benefits to
the Filipino veterans. His amendment was rejected by a majority vote of
56-41.

Senator Akaka (D-HI), Chair of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee had
shown full support not only to the Filipino veterans but to all US war
veterans. He said that the "passage of S. 1315 is about honor and is the
right thing to do. This is America's moral obligation. No fellow warrior
shall be left behind."

The original 200,000 Filipino World War II veterans who fought side by side
with the US veterans are now mostly octogenarians and barely 18,000 are
alive. For more than half a century, the Filipino World War II veterans
have been seeking for just and equal recognition as US veterans. The house
bill HR 760 should continue to gain support from legislators in the House
with the passage of S. 1315 in Senate. The San Francisco Veterans Equity
Center with other veterans advocacy group shall aggressively continue to
work for the passage of these veterans bill until it is finally signed into

A Great Hero of Our Time

REMEMBER BATAAN

April 9th, 1942 marks the day that Bataan fell to enemy forces in WWII and the ensuing Bataan Death March that followed. Approximately 75,000 Pilipino soldiers and U.S. forces alike were forced to trek nearly 100 miles to the prison camp, Camp O'Donnell. These prisoners of war were treated harshly, often being denied food and beaten. Those who fell behind were left for their death or executed. Thousands died, and the road traveled left a trail of the dead.

This Monday, April 9th, 2007 at the Memorial Union Flagpole at 6:30 PM a candlelight vigil will be hosted by SAVE to commemorate this event. That evening, we will be joining countless other candlelight vigils across the nation. I urge everyone to come out and support this endeavor.

We will be holding a presentation, showing archival footage of several boxing matches, a documentary, and discussion about the influences Pilipinos have had on modern day boxing and what is currently happening in the sport today. Sacramento County History Day 2007

This past weekend on Saturday, March 10, 2007 was Sacramento County History Day. Students from different school districts around the county, from grades 4 through 12 competed in six different categories: Paper, Documentary, Performance, Exhibit, Website and Poster. These students deserve much credit in the time and effort they put into developing their entries revolving around this years theme: Triumph & Tragedy in History.

Brothers of Chi Rho Omicron, Inc. were asked to help in this competition by participating as judges. And on behalf of the brotherhood I would like to congratulate Miguel Francisco, Darren Yeung, Christopher Tang, Austin Metz and Justin Yee for their entry, 1828 - World War II: The Philippines. Presented to them was the Chi Rho Omicron, Inc. Philippine Diaspora Award for their hard work and passion for the Philippine culture.

Congratulations to all participants for all your hard work, and thank you to the Sacramento County History Day Board for allowing us to help in this competition. Be sure to check out the gallery for pictures of the event.

The 65th anniversary of the induction of the Filipino soldiers into United States Armed Forces of the Far East is nearing. As many of you know, these soldiers are still denied recognition by the United States.

At 4pm on Wednesday, July 26th, Student Action for Veterans Equity (SAVE) will be holding a Rememberance Vigil to recognize the efforts of the manongs and manangs that have sacrificed so much for our generation. The event will be held on the steps of the entrance of the California State Capitol building in Sacramento. Please come and join local and state officials, veteranos, students, and community members as we honor our heroes.

Youth/Students Honor and Continue to Fight the Injustice of Their Elders

Sacramento, California – July 17, 2006 – Filipino youth and students remember and honor the lives and sacrifices of Filipino WWII veterans.

On Wednesday, July 26, 2006, from 4-6pm the S.tudent A.ction for V.eterans E.quity (SAVE) will be holding a Remembrance Vigil at the west steps of the State Capitol, to urge and demand the passage of the Filipino Veterans Equity Acts of 2005/2006, H.R. 4574 and S. 146. The Vigil commemorates the 65th anniversary of Filipino soldiers' induction into the United States Armed Forces of the Far East. The Vigil is part of a week-long commemoration dedicated to the fight for Full Equity only for Filipino WWII veterans.

On July 26, 1941, through an executive order from President Roosevelt, Filipino soldiers' were inducted into the United States Armed Forces of the Far East, into a war in which the president promised U.S. veterans status, along with all the benefits that accompany that title. Since the Philippines was a territory of the U.S. during that time, these Filipino soldiers were fighting as American nationals under the U.S. flag. But in February of 1946, after WWII ended in the Philippines, the 79th Congress passed into law the 1st Supplemental Surplus Appropriation Rescission Act. This Act stated that the Filipino soldiers who fought were "deemed to not have served" maintaining that the services of these soldiers were not recognized by the U.S. as legitimate.

With less than 25,000 Filipino WWII veterans, all of whom are in their late 70's and 80's, some even in their 90's, how long will it take to finally correct this injustice? And how long will it take for the government to finally be accountable to a promise that has continually remained broken for over 65 years? Luisa Antonio, Executive Director of the Veterans Equity Center states, "Out of the 200,000 conscripted to serve, less than 25,000 are alive & if we want to impact the lives of these veterans, this is the time to recognize them, because they have suffered enough, they have waited long enough."

S.tudent A.ction for V.eterans E.quity urges the community to join us at the remembrance vigil on Wednesday July 26, 2006 from 4-6pm at the at the west steps of the State Capitol in Sacramento. There will be a short program with speakers from the California Legislature, the Veterans Equity Center, National Network for Veterans Equity, and the Filipino WWII Veterans community and the Sacramento Asian Pacific American community. This event is sponsored in part by Assemblymember Dave Jones district office. Thank you to everyone who attended info night, we hoped you all learned about who we are and what we stand for. On behalf of the brotherhood I would also like to thank all the beautiful and lovely sisters of Kappa Psi Epsilon, Chi Delta Theta, Sigma Omicron Pi, Lambda Sigma Gamma and Delta Xi Phi for presenting to us that night. Thirty-seven years after the manongs received their first eviction notices, the new I-Hotel will be reopening in its original location in the heart of San Francisco's old manilatown with 104 units of low income housing, a community center, and a museum to honor the struggle of the original tenants and of the Pilipino-American experience. Come celebrate this momentous occasion with us on August 26th.

In all seriousness, this is one of the most significant events to happen in recent Pilipino-American history. You do not want to miss this.

Background on the I-Hotel

The International Hotel, otherwise known as the I-Hotel, was once was the heart of the old Manilatown in downtown San Francisco. It was home to over a hundred senior citizens primarily of Pilipino descent. The above photograph was taken in 1977. On August 4, four hundred police officers in full riot gear crushed the barricade of three thousand protestors surrounding the building. The doors of the building were smashed in, and the remaining Manongs were dragged out of the building to live on the streets.

Just two years later, the I-Hotel was a hole in the ground, and corporate owners planned on constructing a parking structure. But the fight didn't end there. Organizations like the MHF fought for decades, and nearly 30 years later, the International Hotel has been rebuilt with 104 units of low income housing. The I-Hotel will reopen on August 26, 2005.

Tomorrow, August 4th, marks the 28th anniversary of the eviction of the tenants at the International Hotel in San Francisco. There will be a candlelight vigil to commemerate the final anniversary of the eviction before the opening of the new I-Hotel on August 26. Please come in memorium of old Manilatown and the struggle of the manongs.

TOMORROW: Call for full equity at the State Capitol

Courtesy Bobby G. Roy, XPO125. Tomorrow there will be a press conference at the state capitol in Sacramento calling for the full support of full equity for the Filipino Veteranos.

I just came from a local community meeting regarding the Equity Bill.
The guest speaker was Eric Lachica and apparently he's in the state for
the week or so. Some significant things he mentioned were that Boxer
signed on, but Feinstein hasn't. What's up with that? He set up a press
conference at the Capitol to urge Schwarzenegger to support the Equity
Bill just as the Hawaii governor has. He's pushing some specific
numbers as far as savings to the state, cost of the Equity Bill, etc.
He mentioned S 170 as a "fall-back" bill? I don't get it. Sorry it's
short notice, but here are the essentials.

What: Press conference calling for the public support of Governor
Schwarzenegger of S 146 and HR 302.

1.) Find out which Congressman represents you by entering your zip code at this site.

2.) Find out whether or not they support HR302 by checking this list.

3.) If they aren't a co-sponsor of HR302, the bill to give veteran status back to Pilipino World War II veterans, at least send an email to them. Explain to them that you are a voting constituent (you are registered to vote right?) and tell them about how you support the reversal of the Rescission Act of 1946 which took away the veteran benefits and rights that were promised to Filipino manongs and manangs.

If you can, call, FAX, and WRITE to your congressman about this fight.

4.) If you want to become seriously involved in the fight for full equity, a number of us at UC Davis are trying to start Student Action For Veteran Equity (SAVE) back up in our area. If you want to help out with this cause, please contact me, Janine Fiel, or Josh Santeramo for more information.

Another day without FULL EQUITY

Days ago, Magdaleno Sanchez Duenas, a Pilipino Veteran of World War II passed away. This is another hero that has passed away without the honor that undeniably should have been granted to him by the United States. About seven Veteranos die every day, and the struggle to award them with the FULL EQUITY that they deserve rages on.

Thursday, March 3rd, the UC Davis senate will be having a meeting. They will be discussing the passage of a resolution to declare their support of the two FULL EQUITY bills which are currently in Congress: HR-302 in the House of Representatives and S-146 in the Senate.

With the support of powerful organizations like ASUCD, we hope to gain further recognition for this struggle to strengthen our voice. If you support our cause, please be at the Mee room in the Memorial Union at 6:30 on Thursday. We will be heard.

May 27, 1914 - February 27, 2005

Courageous Filipino World War II Veteran Passes Away at 90

Magdaleno Duenas was born in Maasin, Southern Leyte, Philippines on May 27, 1914. His parents were Raymundo Caolino Duenas and Rosa Ortiz Sanchez. He had 7 siblings, all of who have passed away. He is survived by his half brother and sister, Raymundo and Concepcion Duenas who reside in Marikina, Philippines.

As a child Mr. Duenas lived in the Institute of San Jose in Leyte. He grew up in a convent, and after finishing grade school he went to Cebu to work as an errand boy for a certain Manang Lolay.

In 1937, Mr. Duenas went with his friend, Jesus La Serna, to Davao City to work for Charles Parson, owner of Luzon Stevedoring. In November 1941, he received a telegram from Edward Goldsborough and Robert Fletcher and asked him to report for duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Mr. Duenas joined the 101st Infantry in Davao, Philippines.

In 1943, Mr. Duenas joined the guerilla forces and lived in the mountains. While in the mountains, he did not have any shoes and he survived by eating yam (camote) and lugaw (soup). On December 24, 1942, he was captured by the Japanese soldiers while getting food supply at the request of the American soldiers. He was questioned on the whereabouts of the American soldiers, of which he denied any knowledge. At nighttime, he successfully escaped and returned to the guerilla forces in the mountains. On the evening of April 4, 1943, while the Japanese guards were asleep, Mr. Duenas assisted in the escape of 10 U.S. soldiers from the Davao Penal Colony. These 10 U.S. soldiers then joined the guerilla forces until the liberation. Mr. Duenas ensured that they had enough f! ood to survive the difficulty of hiding.

After the liberation, Mr. Duenas lived in Misamis Occidental. He was enlisted by the government as one of the many Filipino soldiers who fought alongside with the Americans during World War II. Since 1948, he received a token every Christmas from General Schoefner, who was one of the 10 soldiers that Mr. Duenas helped escape from Davao Penal Colony.

In 1991, Mr. Duenas was approached by a certain Mr. Dazo to help him get his documentation to obtain his U.S. citizenship. After Mr. Duenas arrived in Richmond, California, in 1992, Mr. Dazo took advantage and abused Mr. Duenas. In 1993, a group of Filipino American community advocates discovered the living conditions of Mr. Duenas and other Filipino World War II veterans and rescued them from the hands of Mr. Dazo. It was discovered that Mr. Duenas' welfare check were being taken by Mr. Dazo. Mr. Dazo forced Mr. Duenas to work against his will, and pu! nished him by tying him on his bed with a chain and was fed dog food.

Mr. Duenas began residing in the Tenderloin District of San Francisco in 1993. All these years, he waited, for the recognition of the U.S. government for the services he had rendered during World War II. Mr. Duenas was featured in two documentaries, Tears of Old by Joy Lacanienta and Second Class Veterans by Don Young. He died still waiting for the full equity bill in the U.S. Congress to be passed.

The San Francisco Veterans Equity Center will hold a memorial service for Mr. Duenas on March 7, 2005 at 5:30 p.m. at the War Memorial, 401 South Van Ness, San Francisco. For more information, please contact the SFVEC at (415) 255-2347 or email at sfvec2000@yahoo.com.
